Tumbling West, Out of the Rain

The photo of the beach below was my gold at the end of the rainbow, after the long haul to Australia’s West Coast. The East Coast’s Great Barrier Reef dive and sail trip were canceled due to flooding, so I moved along to plan B. This meant an overnight bus trip turned into a day-long coach ride, a 6 hour flight, and a 1 hour bus ride to Fremantle, near Perth. Although a lengthy journey, it was better than sitting around waiting for the rains to stop!

Above: The Quokka, a marsupial, only exists on Rottnest Island and nowhere else on the planet. When the Dutch discovered the island, they named it Rottnest for “Rats’ Nest” and dismissed it, thinking these creatures were large rats.
