After finding all lost baggage the next challenge was to rent (and drive) a car on the left side of the road and sit in the driver’s seat on the right side of the vehicle. No accidents..I know my dad the insurance agent will be proud! Although those sheep do get into the road and we had to slam on the breaks not once but twice yesterday on our way to the campground from the beach!
So far some of the most impressive sites have been the glow worms in the caves of Waitoma which can only be seen at night and the hot water beach on the Coromandel Peninsula. Just by digging a few inches into the sand, hot water fills the trench and turns a normal sand pit into a hot tub, with the best view of the ocean and cliffs. We spent hours here! At this location I met a family who was driving the coast in a 6 person camper van and they told us how to get a good deal on these. I may check into it for the Australian Coast in February. The name of the rental company is http://www.standbycars.co.au and it has vans for just $1 a day, because they need help relocating them to other areas of the country! Mom, you can imagine my excitement since I have wanted to do this since I was a little kid…maybe I am a hippie at heart!?
